We’re inviting under 12’s far and wide to pop by the library between 11am and 3pm on Thursday the 16th and to come have a go at making zines with some of the South East London Zines team. We’ll be armed with plenty of examples (from perzines to odes to our favourite things) and all the drawing and collage materials needed for kids to put together their own zines. We’re super stoked for the workshop and hope that it’ll motivate kids to continue to share and swap and self publish their own work afterwards. See you there!

the first zine meet up was awesome, and below you can see some of the fine drawings we did together over a couple of mid-week drinks! So, we’re in 2012, and hoping for the meet ups to grow, so that we have people around to encourage each other to get their comix, zines and other self published projects sorted and to meet like-minded people and just have a good time…

The next three meet ups will be upstairs at the Amersham Arms, in New Cross from 7pm the dates are:

The upstairs also has space for exhibitions, launches etc, so if anyone has any ideas for anything they’d want to do around the meet ups, or would like to use the meet ups to launch something, please let us know.

SE London Zine meet ups…

The idea is to start meeting regularly to encourage each other by being around other artists, writers and self publishers and talking about our work, what we hope to do and what we have done.
So, please bring something you have done, or if you haven’t yet taken a step into self publishing, then just bring your enthusiasm!
As well as that, maybe we’ll do some drawing games, writing, get aquainted and maybe have a mince pie and a drink! Bring some pens and paper if you like!

Other than events we want to start a monthly meet up of SE based artists, writers, zinesters and really anyone interested. We’ll meet, talk about our work, encourage each other and maybe have a drink or some cake! The idea is for people to have a circle of creative people around them to encourage them in their work… Its always good to have people to bounce ideas off… Keep your eyes peeled for details! Upstairs at the zine fest will be a full on day of music, words, poetry, readings, storytelling but also the walls will host work by Paul Ashley Brown, Paul Petard and now added to the bill will be Eriko Hase who will be exhibiting her work for the last time in London, before returning to Japan… but YAY! you’ll get to see her work at the SELZF!!! AWESOME!

As part of the SELZF Gary Northfield (who drew for BEANO!) will be running a workshop for kids at the New Cross Peoples Library. We’re trying to  get young people into zines and making their own books, hopefully this will be one way to do it… Check out Gary’s stuff…

GGB is a feminist collective supporting female artists, writers and musicians. The zine is printed on a monthly basis featuring various work from women all over, as well as a Tumblr which kind of acts like a mood board!

Every month we host a free zine issue party playing a lot of riot grrrl and other female vocalists – we actually screened ’don’t need you’ this month, which is a riot grrrl documentary. We’ve also put on bands like Throwing Up, BROTHERS and Good Throb, and had guest djs like Nathan from The Gossip (Beth Ditto actually came, I nearly cried!)

I released Chixtape #1 6 months ago which featured girl punk/garage bands like Cat Vet, Slutever and Night of Joy and loads more – I had taped and decorated each tape, each with their own individual sticker design.
I’m currently working on releasing Chixtape #2 in a month or so!

I started it at the end of December 2010, that’s when I released the first issue.
I’d been inspired by the riot grrrl zines for years but had sort of lacked self belief, and it was when one of my good friends made an illustration zine that I released how easy it is. Now I’m a part of the zine community, donate to zine libraries and have stalls at fairs - and the support I’ve received is totally amazing.

Here at Goldsmiths W.I. HQ (a gaggle of girls sat in the corner of a pub, but let’s imagine a fantastical Michel Gondry-esque workshop, shall we?) we are mega excited/amped/ keyed up/all a-flutter over the South East London Zine Fest! As a W.I., we’re naturally into the crafty, DIY aspect of zines, but coming from Goldsmiths, its especially ace to be involved with creating a platform for SE London based artists and writers.

Right now, we’re taking submissions for our own zine which we’re putting together for the event, so email us at goldsmithswi@gmail.com to pitch us your ideas/artwork/articles. Think anything oriented towards South East London, sassy chicks and the Women’s Institute, and craft how-to’s, but we’re open to most everything, whether fun or serious. Also, we’re trying to do a mini series of Slutwalk street style illustrations from this summer’s march, and we’d love it if you culd send us your drawings of some of the particularly memorable/fab/funny/badass outfits from the event.

During the Zine Fest, come to our table for our zine and baked treats, and feel free to join in with any crafting we’re doing at the table. You can also join us at a craft workshop and help us make massive amounts of bunting. We’ll even have embroidery thread to hand if you really want to personalize it.

PS- when we were discussing on of our other features earlier in the week, a ‘greatest hits’ selection of South East London sights, the Dinosaur Court at Crystal Palace Park came up. Since most of us hadn’t been in an age, we decided to put together a mini W.I. trip to the park. On Monday the 24th, we’ll be meeting at New Cross Gate Station at 3pm and traveling to the park from there. We may or may not be bringing dinosaur shaped biscuits with us.
